hey, I just found this:
http://www.doubletongued.org/
the "Double-Tongued Dictionary" (and how cool a name is that, for starters? ) It focuses on slang and jargon etc and has a by-country category ^_^
And while I'm recommending things, I actually found it as an offshoot of this website:
http://www.word-detective.com/
which is all about WORDS!! XD There's a section called 'My Favourite Word' which is total awesome ^_^ It's so cool to know I'm not the only person in the world that thinks crazy things about language, like 'I like the word lush because it tastes LUSH' *grins* _________________ Remember; it's not just a sin, it's a felony. |

I like the word 'Clotted'. Go on, say it out loud. It feels like your mouth is full of whipped cream.
Anyway, this has totally gone off topic.
Also, I have never seen Little Britain, but all of my friends love it. It's been running in Australia for ages...I don't think I watch enough television.
I do like Black Adder though. Rowan Atkinson + Hugh Laurie + time travel = lolz.
And I can't really think of anything more to contribute to this thread right now. _________________

Clotted is good! I like defenestration - because how cool is it that throwing something, esp a person, out a window has a word all of its own? Awesomeness. And it rhymes with 'penetration', and potty humour is always funny *cackles... facepalms*
Off topic? Who's off topic? Every word we write could be the word that reveals a crucial piece of culture-specific information that would aid in the writing of Shadows which would otherwise not have been shared and thus would not have aided in the writing of Shadows and thus would leave a gaping hole where the crucial piece of culture-specific information should be...
convincing? *waggles eyebrows* lol
And, hey, look: http://nzguide.newzealand.co.nz/kiwispeak/index.php?todo=list_records a list of kiwi words/sayings ^_^ I haven't heard of all of these, like "A few logs short of a barbie" (where barbie is BBQ lol) - in my family we have "A few sandwiches short of a picnic" and "A few cans short of a six pack"
And oh! Black Adder is AWESOME. I've got the script book and seen it lots and lots and I still crack up every time. I'm so gutted that Rowan Atkinson is best known as Mr. Bean - whom I do not find funny at all - and that Hugh Laurie is best known as House. WTF people?!?!?!

wtffff... When those two guys' names were mentioned with Black Adder I didn't even recognize them until you just said Mr. Bean and House *cough* I have to say.... I don't like Mr. Bean. But I just watched a few clips of Black Adder and the show seems like it may be pretty amusing from what I can tell. Rowan's the butler, right? Or is that Hugh Laurie? It's hard to tell with the quality of the vid.
PS: I love defenestration XD There's also a word in Spanish for 'running someone/thing over' which cracks me up -- atropellar. Although apparently that has some other slang with it... |

Hugh Laurie is the dipstick. Percy. Rowan Atkinson = Butlerlulz.
I just love how he hates everybody so so much. His angst makes me giggle.
Oh, just because I'm eating one, do you guys have zooper doopers? The icypoles in the plastic pipey things. With the robot pictures?
They're a huge child's lolly over here. When I was a kid we used to eat them and play in the sprinkler on hot summer days. Except we can't play in sprinklers anymore, with the water restrictions and all.
The kids of this generation have got nothing these days. Water restrictions and Political correctness have ruined everything.
Way to go world! _________________

We had them in Israel...they were pretty sick. There were also ones with three different flavors (and three different levers to push them out). I think we had them in the States, too, but I don't know about Canada (I think by the time I got here the fad was well over, so they might have had it in the late 90's and early 00's) |

| Being the loser I am, I googled zooper doopers. They're pretty much freezies, and not push ups like I initially thought. |

zooper doopers? Craaaaaaazy name (though - they have pictures of robots? AWESOME) lol. We do have some juice thing in a tube but I don't know what they're called and I HATE them. Vehemently. It's like eating an iceblock out of a condom... or is that just me? O.o ick.
lol, and I totally agree with Nymph! Water restrictions and PC are f*cking up the current generation - it's no wonder there are so many emos O.o Even when I was a kid (not that long ago *cough*) I could still walk to primary school by myself or with my friend, who was as young and female and blonde as I was at the time. Now I see a kid by themselves and wonder where the hell their parents are O.o
Oooo and since we were talking about lollies/food: what colour are your Twisties packets? I hear they are yellow in Aus? YELLOW! O.o Ours are blue ^_^ I don't know why this disturbed me so much to find out but - what the hell? It's a craaaaaaaaaazy world out there people. _________________ Remember; it's not just a sin, it's a felony. |

Well, Marseille accent is the only « real » accent in France. We call it Marseille accent but it’s more like a South accent.
| Quote: | | Is there a big difference between a Parisian accent |
Actually, there isn’t really a Parisian accent but it’s just the way Parisian people talk. There’s something conceited and pretentious in their talking.

I think Parisian accent would suits Vivienne ^^” |
Hi,
1st post in forums (how on earth this ended being a motivation to register and post? No F idea).
I'm not french, I'm from Barcelona. But I speak french and work with a bunch of frenchs so maybe I can helop a bit.
About Paris accent, exactly what Kira said, everyone calls it an accent, but it's not much of an accent. It's more like the choice of words and the tone.
Marseille/South-France, since you've been in Spain, it may help you to imagine their accent to know that some of the pronuntiation is more like a spanish accent/mixup. As kira said, "au" is pronounced a-u (like in spanish) and not o (like in french). Some other variations in pronuntiation that they have also seems to be an influence of Spanish. It's... hard to describe. And it's not french with a spanish accent, it's their own mix.
XDDD I agree that Vivienne would totally be Parissien accent. Southern accent just doesn´t fits her.
Boyd should pretty much have the same accent.
Except if Boyd has had as much contact with other french "accents". Then he may have totally lost it. I'm speaking from my experience, my family are Belgian (french speakers) but since I passed as much time in Switzerland as in Belgium when I was small, I got the thing mixed. And to add to the mix I now work with frenchs but aren´t exposed to Belgians or Swiss. So I've finished with a sort of impossible-to-locate accent. My grandmother and mother says that I have a French (as in, from france) accent now. But frenchs also says I don´t sound french. In the end no one manages to point exactly my country of origin (which happens to be a non-french-speaking country *LOL*).
So for Boyd... I think it could be anything depending on what background you want to play with. He could have a neutral/mixed accent or the same as his mother, depending on how/when he learnt french and how exposed to other accents he's been. |

Innnnteresting. Actually, that makes a lot of sense to me.
So it's sort of this weird mixture... is it anything like/mildly related to Catalan? I remember when I was in Spain, there was this one place where we were in a Subway area. And I was looking at these signs on the wall and it looked like this weird language that was a mix of French and Spanish, and I was like "wtf is that??"
Anyway I guess Marseilles is around a bend from Northern Catalonia it looks like on the map so maybe not. Although I can't tell completely.
It's also a good point about the accent. I don't think Boyd's been exposed to many French-speaking people, and of anyone who he has, they probably aren't native speakers so they probably have whatever accent they were taught in American classes.
Oh also, PS: Bwahaha... we reeled you in with the accent questions but now that you've registered, we'll make you stay!
PPS: Holy crap, Barcelona is so beautiful! Lucky place to live. That was my favorite city in Spain... Even though I was sick when I was there for the first day. I'm pretty sure the best paella (vegetarian style) I ever had was in Barcelona, and I have no idea what the name of the restaurant was, but I remember it was small and there were tables on the main floor you walked in on and there was this bar type thing to the left, or you could walk down (or was it up? I think down) these stairs to the right into this more secluded seating area. And they gave huuuuge portions. And it was SO good that I never ate that much rice at once in my life XD |

It's as related to it as to Spanish I guess. In Perpignan they also speak Catalan (no idea about how many people). So I'm pretty sure there must be some of it too.

LOL, that was probably... anywhere in Barcelona.
I'm sorry it was a surprise for you. Sadly Spain seems to take the approach of "if you don´t speak about it it doesn´t exists" and Catalonia by itself doesn´t has the ability to explain about it beyond the closest areas of influence. In the end it's visitors and immigration who sometimes gets a nasty surprise because no one bothered telling them Catalan existed and is in use.
That said, Catalan isn´t a mix of French and Spanish even if it looks similar to both. It's another language evolved from Latin. So it has the same similarities and differences as Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian have among them.
Some words as an example (thanks goggle for the Italian and Portuguese) will probably explain better:
F=French, S=Spanish, C=Catalan, I=Italian, P=Portuguese
Computer -- F: Ordinateur, S: Ordenador, C: Ordinador, I: computer? P: Computador
Window -- F: fenêtre, S: Ventana, C: Finestra, I: Finestra P: janela
Mouse -- F: souris S: Ratón C: ratolí P: rato
Table -- F: table S: Mesa C: taula P: Mesa I: Tavolo
Carpet: F: tapis S: alfombra C: catifa P: carpete I: tappeto
Bottle: F: bouteille S: botella C: ampolla P: garrafa I: bottiglia
Glass: F: verre S: vaso C: got P: vidro I: vetro
As you see, it's pretty random what matches and what doesn´t. And then of course you have things that seems the same but then means something else.
Sometimes I really wonder what exactly decides if something is a language or a dialect. ^^ Maybe if history or geography had been just a bit difference, Marseille would have a language and not just an accent.

I had a job mate whose English was really excellent but sounded like crap. His father is English but somehow... he's stuck with a very strong Spanish accent. Everyone got highest scores in English than him unless the teacher were good enough to see through his accent and notice his vocabulary, grammar and spelling were perfect. XDDD Poor thing.
| Quote: | Oh also, PS: Bwahaha... we reeled you in with the accent questions but now that you've registered, we'll make you stay! |
terrified... I'm completely terrified...
Thanks about the compliments for Barcelona. It's always hard to know what to say. We (Barcelonians) tends to be very proud of the city (even if living in it is a real bitch).
Paella, Tortilla de Patatas and Jamon: those are the secret ingredients to conquer the world (by its stomach instead of by massacring the natives). I'm sure that if we had fed that to the world we would still have some colonies left. Instead we did horrors... and got kicked out some centuries later. |

That was really interesting to see the same word in the different languages. You're right, Catalan is randomly way different than the others in some cases. I'm surprised, actually. It's not even close to French and Spanish in places. Like glass-- geez, Catalan looks more Germanic than Romance there.
Also, I should have clarified... I think the tour group we were with told us that Catalan existed after we saw it. And I thought it was really cool-- I just didn't realize it was a completely separate language. I was under the impression it was a dialect.
Barcelona was awesome. I always tell anyone who asks me about Spain-- if they're asking me what city to go to, I always say that one.
That's so sad about your coworker XD |

That's also what I thought. I was randomly taken words of stuff around me and when I saw the "got" there I was surprised. Of course I knew a glass is "got", but never having done a list of words like that I had never noticed that it didn't match at all. XDDDD
Apparently it is from latin.
got1
[s. XIV; del ll. vg. *gŏttus, ll. cl. guttus '
vaso.
(Del lat. vasum).
Well that was the cultural research event of the day. The strange things one ends up searching online...
Wouldnt it have made more sense to explain before hand? Like "we will visiting Barcelona which is the capital of Catalonia. Catalonia blahblahblah *insert random history, culture and politic facts*"

Madrid is also worth visiting they have truly amazing there... Well... if you are into old churches, convents, palaces and the likes. XDDD I couldn't live in Madrid, I tried and didn't last a year, but I like it quite a lot for visiting.
And I'm sure the south also must have some pretty cool stuff too with all he Arabian influences. Haven't gone down there yet, I figure I'll do the tourism to nearer easier places when I'm an old lady. ^^u |

Oh there are definitely some beautiful places in the south. We went to a whole bunch of cities in a circuit.. my favorites were Barcelona, Montserrat, Alhambra and Sevilla.
I liked Madrid, too, but I liked Barcelona way more. I don't really know why, I just liked the feel of it more. Madrid was like, big city... but Barcelona was big city with a lot of charm. And everyone seemed friendlier there somehow, not that people were mean in Madrid. I think I also really liked the architecture.
Argh, I wish I remembered more. But we also visited this gorgeous, awesome church that was under construction for years and probably still is... what the hell was that called... it was gothic... I'm going to feel so stupid when I find out because it's just on the tip of my tongue...
Familia something maybe? Sangre? Why do I always think blood... Wait! Sangria Familia Church maybe? Hmm.. |

| Thanks! I know very little French and unfortunately some of our characters are fluent in it so we may end up needing to ask you for help sometime. Also, if you notice any French is grammatically incorrect/etc that we have in the story already, we always are happy to know. ^^ |
